This classic blue cheese dressing from scratch is so thick and creamy, easy to make, and tastes just like the blue cheese dressing from your favorite steakhouse wedge salad.
Blue cheese can be a divisive flavor, but while some may turn up their noses at this pungent cheese, I say bring on the funk! I love the punch of piquant acidity it brings to so many dishes. From my BBQ chicken pizza and caramelized onion crostini with fig jam to the classic wedge salad, blue cheese delivers a deceptively big flavor that complements so many sweet and savory ingredients. I love sprinkling creamy little morsels into my salads, but blue cheese dressing is my favorite vehicle for enjoying this scrumptious cheese. I mean, what’s Buffalo chicken without it?
In This Post
The homemade blue cheese dressing is far above and beyond anything you can find on the store shelves, even the refrigerator section, and has just the right bite thanks to a dash of red wine vinegar and a bit of buttermilk. It’s so quick and easy to make (just be sure to chill it for at least 20 minutes, which will help the flavors meld together and the dressing thicken).
What’s Blue Cheese Dressing Made Of
This blue cheese dressing features a base of sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk for the best thick and creamy texture and rich flavor. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:
- light sour cream (you can use regular if that’s what you have)
- mayonnaise
- buttermilk
- red wine vinegar
- Worcestershire sauce
- garlic salt
- black pepper
- blue cheese
- chives
How to Make Blue Cheese Dressing
Making this blue cheese dressing couldn’t be simpler. Just add all of the dressing ingredients to a medium bowl and whisk well to combine. Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes (this allows time for the flavors to meld and the dressing to get cool and thicken up).
Is Blue Cheese Dressing Just Ranch With Bleu Cheese?
No. While the two dressings are cool and creamy and may look similar and share some of the same ingredients, blue cheese is not masquerading as ranch. My blue cheese dressing has different quantities of sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk and is thicker than my ranch dressing, and they have different flavor profiles.
How Long Does Blue Cheese Dressing Last?
If desired, you can make a batch of the homemade blue cheese dressing in advance and keep it on hand for salads throughout the week. The blue cheese dressing should last 5-7 days in the fridge.
